Seminar on Self-Defence Techniques for DSBA Girls

Self-defence, especially for women, is of supreme importance in the kind of the world we live in. In India, cases of gender violence are on a rise, women are considered as easier targets and hence, self-defence for women has become a necessity.

On 4 August ’15, DSBA girls were initiated into self-defence techniques by Mr Nanda Kumar, International Level Taekwondo Player between 10:30 am and 12 pm at the IV Floor. Prof Nikitha Sreekantha introduced the trainer to the audience. Some faculty were present too!

Mr Nanda Kumar R started Taekwondo at the age of 12 while studying in grade 7. He got motivated in Martial Arts watching movies of the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and the others. He is a professional full time Taekwondo instructor, national referee, national coach and an international player. He is a National Gold Medallist and has participated in three international Taekwondo matches and won gold in two international matches.

Mr Nanda Kumar R, 1st DAN Black Belt [ ITF], is a Taekwondo instructor at Forge Taekwondo Club at Yelachenahalli, Bangalore. His impressive credentials include being a silver medallist in the 3rd South Asian ITF Taekwondo Championship in Nepal [17th – 18th April’14], Gold Medallist in 9th World Taekwondo Culture Expo Competition in Korea [15 July’15] and Gold Medallist in Jeonju Open International Taekwondo Championship in China [20 July’15].

Fresh off his China victory, Mr Kumar stated that girls feel empowered to know some self-defence tactics, so they could start to feel more confident about defending themselves if necessary. He encouraged all participants to know how to fight back by themselves and [not to] wait for anyone else to save them. He further said that regardless of strength, size, or previous training, anyone can learn several effective self-defence techniques.

He demonstrated on how to prepare for and stay safe in common real-world violent situations. He showed those parts of the body that can be used most effectively for inflicting damage: one’s elbows, knees, and head (they’re like body’s built-in weapons). Next is leveraging the weight-which is the principle behind all martial arts systems.

Students came forward in pairs and learnt some easy practical moves. At the end of the session the girls understood the importance of the undisputed need for equipping themselves with Self Defense Techniques.

The session ended with Prof Nikitha presenting a token of appreciation on behalf of the institution to Mr Nanda Kumar .

This special gesture of the men, made the women feel really important and appreciated.
