Lecture on Environmental Legislations and Issues-A Report

On 28th Jan 2016, at 2:30 pm.in room no 110, the second semester students of DSBA were privileged to listen to an environmental expert for an awe-inspiring one hour session on environmental related issues.

Mr Madhusudan S, the resource person, is an environmental officer at Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Regional office, Bangalore .He gave a motivational talk to the zealous students.

Dr Veena K N, Dean DSBA was present. The second semester class coordinators and some other faculties were present for the lecture. Prof Nikitha HOD [UG] welcomed the guest and presented his credentials which, spoke volumes about his education and experience.Prof Priyanka handed over a bouquet of flowers to him.

In the beginning, Mr Madhusudan gave an introduction on pollution and enumerated the types. He spoke at length about sewers and advised the students to educate themselves about the way a sewage treatment plant functions. He also enlightened the audience about WHO’s stipulated drinking water standards. Next, he highlighted the major classes of air pollutants and adverse effects of pollution on health. He spoke on the common ailments prevalent in Bangalore and gave practical examples too.In depth, he stressed on manmade pollution and also on India’s air quality with an emphasis on the capital city-New Delhi.

Later, he briefed the students on soil/ land pollution and ill effects of noise pollution. In the end, he updated the audience on the Rules/Notifications under the Environment [Protection] Rules and said that the biggest challenge faced by environment today is due to sewage and the garbage.

The oration was interactive and thus it helped the students to get their queries answered while the session was in progress. However, some students wanted clarifications on ozone depletion and greenhouse effect and the speaker adeptly explained it in detail. Prof Nikitha handed over a token of appreciation to the guest and Prof Usha proposed the vote of thanks. With this, a highly informative session on Environmental Legislations and Issues came to an end.
