Report on the guest lecture held on March 23, 2016

The final year students of DSBA had a chance meeting with Dr.Shailashree Haridas on 23rd March’16 in the seminar hall at DSBA. She addressed the students from 3pm to 4:30 pm.

 Dr Shailashree Haridas is an alumni of IIM-Calcutta & has a Doctorate in Economics. She is an academician & corporate trainer with 17 years of experience in training. [B Schools & corporate world] She has many publications and a book to her credit.

She is a trained 'Veena' player & also a classical music singer.

Dr Shailashree Haridas touched upon three areas in her one and half hour session. She spoke about how economics can be used while making business decisions. She enlightened the students on concepts in Economics like Law of Demand, Diminishing Marginal Utility and Elasticity of demand and its use in management decisions. She urged the students to learn Excel and also to learn economics with interest as these are widely used in all companies.

Her discussion later turned to Central Budget’16. She gave an insight into the thought-process that goes in framing the Union budget. She spoke about the different tactics used by the budget committee to frame the budget. She explained it further by sighting examples from the recent budget.

The third area she focussed on was the career opportunities that are available in the present political field. She detailed about the post graduate programme in Political Leadership, a flagship programme of MIT School of Government, Pune. She spoke about different job profiles for those who are interested in taking politics as their career option. She also specified on the job profiles that are available, if economics is taken as specialisation subject at the post graduate level. 

The students were enriched listening to the experiential insights provided by the speaker.
