Workshop on Self -Defense Techniques for DSBA Girls

Self Defence is not only our right, its our duty

In today’s world, Martial Arts is not just limited to competitions alone, as the need of the hour suggests that for women to lead a carefree life, it’s imperative for women to train themselves with Self -Defense techniques.

DSBA conducted a workshop in self -defense techniques on 10 Nov’17 for UG Girls on the IV Floor at 11 am.

The instructor was an alumnus of DSBA himself-Mr Syed Suleiman [BBM Batch,2013-2016]. Syed Suleiman is a young Muay Thai expert who has won many championships and has made our country proud. He is an inspiration for Muay Thai and all other martial arts enthusiasts who really are passionate, irrespective of their gender and want to make a mark with their abilities.

Syed addressed the girls and spoke about his incredible journey.

He said that Muay Thai, is not very common in India unlike Karate; hence in his childhood, wanted to join Karate only. In 1999 he joined a martial arts centre and after 4 to 5 years he came to know that he was doing Muay Thai which is totally different from Karate and other martial arts. He joined the first batch in India that started Muay Thai under M. H. Ahmed and from there he developed his passion for this martial art. He has won 7 world championships in various weight categories, 17 national championships and 8 various other championships in Muay Thai. Training is a part of his daily life and he loves to spend maximum time in the rings only. He also mentioned that concentrating on foods and supplements is also essential for Muay Thai.As an athlete, one should know that winning and losing are part of the game and one should accept both as important lessons. So, after winning any match one shouldn’t be overconfident but continue to train and upgrade the techniques. It should be a lesson too for the winner as the opponent who couldn’t win will try to win in the next match and definitely prepare better as compared to the previous one. Likewise, there is learning from the loss too. It’s to be taken in a positive way and one must learn from the mistakes. He expressed that he got immense support from his family and is happily living his passion of Muay Thai. The girls were in awe listening to his inspirational journey.

Initially, Prof Crissy Mathew volunteered to help him demonstrate some simple self -defense techniques that everyone could learn. Later, he encouraged the girls to volunteer, come forward and learn Self -Defence Techniques like Screaming and pushing the attacker back, locating the parts of the assailant that can be easily attacked, freeing oneself from the wrist hold, front and back choke which of course every woman should know and practice in case of any attack. He finally emphasized -remembering that prevention is the best technique, avoid violence in every case to save oneself, if it cannot be avoided then attack.

Prof Crissy thanked Syed for being a source of inspiration for the young DSBA girls and hoped many girls join the self-defence classes, get trained and help defend themselves.

Each girl owes it to herself!
