Workshop on Self- Defense Techniques

 

Self-defence skills empowers the girl students in many aspects.Being able to protect oneself in all situations is a huge confidence booster as well as a reassurance. Self -Défense classes per se are for everyone, not just for children and women alone. The advantages for taking self-defence classes are innumerable – among them are building confidence, improving focus, developing self-discipline and warrior-spirit, improving physical conditioning and street awareness. The classes also teach one to self-respect and bring a positive influence in one’s life.

A workshop on self -Défense was conducted at the IV floor by two trainers on 10 Nov’18 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm for the UG girls. Prof Nikitha Sreekantha-HOD, DSBA introduced the trainers before the start of their respective sessions.

 

The workshop began with a demonstration by Mr Anil -V Sem BCom student. His coach is  Mr Nanda Kumar R, a professional full time Taekwondo instructor, national referee, national coach and an international player. Mr Anil has been practising Taekwondo from the past three years. He also learnt Muay Thai in 2014 with Master Rakesh Yadav for a year. His achievements are as follows: He has won 2 gold medals and 3 bronze medals so far. His first state level match was on 26 Nov’16 at Koramangala and he won a bronze medal. Second match was a north zonal match in Uttarakhand wherein he won a gold. Though he lost the third match at Goa he regained his position at the national level by winning a bronze medal in his fourth match at Jaipur.In Nov’17 he played at the state level and won a bronze again. After a brief break, on 28th October’18 he again participated in a match at kerala and bounced back to win a gold medal.Anil has been selected as Corner Jury for the 18th Karnataka State Level Taekwondo –ITF, Championship to be held on Nov30, 2018 at Koramangala, Bengaluru.

He taught students basic, practical self-defence skills, which will enable them to get away safely from any untoward situation as quickly as possible.

The next session was by Mr Syed Suleiman-an alumnus of DSBA. His amazing credentials made the girls awe-struck. His accomplishments include winning District Muay Thai Championship47 Times [39 Golds, 6 Silvers, 2 Bronze], he has been National Muay Thai Gold Medallist17 Timesand has not lost ,won World Muay Thai Championship 7 Times -5 Golds, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze  in Thailand, Belgium, South Korea, won Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games twice  -1 Gold, and 1 Silver, in China and Vietnam, he has also won  International Fight Night Championship twice and K1-KickBoxing1  Championship 4 Times.

 He has been nominated for Heroes of Bengaluru Awards,adjudged Best fighter in Asia in the years -2015,2016,2017 and has been awarded Best fighter of India for the past 8 Years.

He has got selected for India's Biggest Kickboxing League -Pro Kickboxing League.

He stated to the girls to stand up for themselves, to fight back, shout, scream, do anything to feign off violence when encountered.Neither will one-day workshop help anybody,nor will a motivating talk about how girlsmust keep themselves safe by seeking protection and wearing society deemed appropriate clothes. Instead girls must equip themselves with self-defence techniques by joining any type of self-defence classes.

The instructor motivated girls to come up with real- life scenarios and Syed demonstrated how one can protect oneself in such situations with the right kind of moves- bear hug, arm pull, hair pull, wall choke, arm choke, ground choke etc. Mr.Shree Girinadh and Mani -I Sem BBA helped him with the demonstration.Mr Suleiman explained that if one practices how to react in real-life situations, one will feel calm and confident instead of freezing up if such a situation ever arises.Besides, the moves taught are only to weaken the assailant and getting away and advised the girls not to keep attacking the assailant.

He offered number of easy practical suggestions and showed how tactical pen and stole among other common objects can also help girls protect themselves.At the end of the session Mr Syed insisted all the girls to practise the self-defence moves taught during his session. He reiterated that one must practise them regularly so that they become a second nature.

Prof Meera Seshanna thanked the trainers and on behalf of DSBA, Prof Crissy handed a token of appreciation to them. Positive and encouraging feedback was given by the girls on both the sessions conducted during the day.
