FDP on Mentoring Through Zentangle Way

‘’If practising the traditional meditation could be therapeutic, so can the practice of making Zentangles’’ Zentangle ® is an easy to learn relaxing and a fun way to create beautiful images by drawing repetitive patterns. This art was conceptualized and created by Rick Roberts & Maria Thomas in USA. The benefits of practicing Zentangle are: it stimulates creativity, improves eye hand coordination, focus and handwriting, beats stress, uplifts mood, helps one manage anger and enhances patience, develops self-confidence & creates beauty. Little did the creators know that their discovery would come to receive such enormous acceptance and touch as many lives as it has today! Faculty and administrative staff at DSBA were fortunate to learn ‘Zentangle’-the therapeutic art form from Mr Dilip P. Patel and Ms Malathi Karpur who have the credit of learning the method directly from the creators and are India’s first certified Zentangle teachers. Since 2012, using the authentic Zentangle method, they have been organizing workshops and classes across various cities in the country, and trained over 800 people; helping people with no artistic background find peace through this simple technique. They conducted a workshop on 12th Jan’19 from 1 pm to 4:30 pm in Room G-01, B Block. Dr [Brig] Sandes -Principal DSBA; Dr Veena K N - Dean, DSBA and Prof Nikitha Sreekantha, HOD also participated in the workshop. Dr Veena K N introduced the trainers and Dr [Brig] Sandes welcomed them with a bouquet. Mr. Dilip Patel is an experienced Senior Facilitator with a demonstrated history of working in the non-profit organization management industry. He is skilled in Negotiation, Talent Management, Coaching, Strategic Planning, and Employee Engagement. A strong human resource professional, he is armed with a B E (Electrical) degree from Birla Vishwakarma Maha Vidyalaya. An Electronics engineer by education, Ms Malathi Karpur worked in Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd, India's premier Aeronautical Industry at Bengaluru, for 37 years. For a beginning, a Zentangle®- Kit was given to all participants which consisted of a notepad, one Zentangle tile created by Mr Dilip Patel, four empty tiles, one Sakura Micron 01 pen of permanent, waterproof pigment ink, one soft-leaded Zentangle-branded pencil and a high-quality sharpener. Mr Dilip clarified to the participants that just like the way practising traditional meditation could work as therapy, so would the practice of making Zentangles. Owing to its meditative attributes, the Zentangle Method is slowly being adopted as means for therapy, improving one's self-esteem and creativity while remaining a fun way to emerge calm and focused. In the end, the purpose of creating a Zentangle is celebratory, making one heal and eventually celebrate the beauty of life. Mr Patel began the session by stating that Zentangle method is simple, and the entire process is intended to be without judgment, where the mind is free to traverse a path free of any sort of inhibitions. The classic Zentangle art piece should flow out on paper without any intervention by the mind. It’s meant to be completed using black ink on white paper, is abstract, and a Zentangle does not have a start or an end point. One is refrained from using erasers and thus, with each deliberate stroke one ends up creating an interesting and an unexpected pattern. The best part about making a Zentangle is that anyone can create one without the need of being an artist. This was indeed proved at the workshop. Though the Zentangle art pattern made by Mr Dilip Patel looked complicated and intricate, the simple step by step instructions given by the trainers helped each participant come up with an amazing original Zentangle within a short span of time. A workbook with a few tangle patterns titled “21 Days with Zentangle’’ by Dilip Patel and Malathi Karpur was available for sale for the interested participants. Dr Veena K N proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Dilip Patel handed the certificates of participation to all attendees of the workshop. At the end of the session, the participants discovered an artist in themselves! And the stimulating Zentangle workshop left the attendees wanting for more!! Before the close of the session, all participants posed with their respective tiles beaming with pride and joy at their creations with the trainers.
