Analysis of the Interim Budget-19

Arebus’ Finance Club at DSBA organized its first event in this even semester -an Inter-Class Competition on ‘Analysis of Union Budget 2019’ on 7th and 8th February during the college hours in Room G 08 and G 04 respectively.

Prof Nazeer Pasha, Prof Yeshaswini and Prof Samyuktha coordinated the event.

The judges were Dr [Brig] Sandes, Principal, DSBA; Prof Nikitha Sreekantha-HOD and Prof Meera Seshanna.

II Sem, IV Sem and VI Sem BCom and BBA students participated in the competition. The key guidelines given to the students prior to the event were:

  • Each group could not have more than four students.
  • Students could use a PowerPoint presentation / Oral presentation during the analysis.
  • Duration of each presentation should not be more than ten minutes plus five minutes to be kept aside for the question and answer session.

 Twelve groups participated in all.

Students began by explaining the idea behind the interim budget-the fact that elections would be due hence it would be futile for the government to present a full year budget that it cannot implement. Some groups analysed the concerning issues-relatively high fiscal deficit; the various schemes for -marginal farmers/pension/ middle class benefits; Disinvestment; Tax exemption for individuals; Focus on development in the 10 key areas for the next decade; Direct Tax Proposals; Interest subvention; Interest subsidies; Reduced red tape; Real estate; Annual expenditure outlay; Environmental issues ‘as a vision for the next decade’; Waiving interests & premiums etc. Some groups shared their ideas /views on direct tax, indirect tax, public services, economy, life sciences & health care, consumption vs disposable income and so on.

It was clearly evident through the discussion that student groups had made a collective effort and were an enthusiastic lot! The judges were impressed with the analysis of some groups during the question /answer sessions and to the other groups specially to help the first-year novice students, Dr Sandes voiced his suggestions/advice for improvement.
