Baking Basics Cake Baking Workshop

DSBA girls were looking forward to the baking session for days [After last year’s cookie making workshop’s resounding success] and finally the big day arrived!

184 BCom, BCA and BBA girls gathered on the IV floor of B Block on 1st Feb’19 for a one-day workshop on Baking Cakes. The timings were 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The students were divided into two batches so that maximum interaction could take place and they would all get an opportunity to participate as this workshop was a hands-on one. Students once again discovered that day that they could bake, decorate and eat the cake too!

 

Prof Nikitha Sreekantha introduced the trainers Ms Vijaya and Ms Roopa to the audience. Prof Meera Seshanna and Prof Chaitanya welcomed them with bouquets. Dr Veena K N -Dean, DSBA and other faculty members were also present.

Ms Vijaya Vinod is an engineering graduate and has worked as Sr lecturer at BNM institute. Now, she is a homemaker and has turned into a successful entrepreneur assisting a catering service, Kitchen Genie. She believes in healthy eating and lifestyle herself, utilizes her free time exploring new recipes. Her hobbies are music, painting, yoga, dance, travel and photography.

Ms Roopa Manivannan has completed engineering in Computer Science and started her career as a lecturer. She also had an IT career with Telstra Australia. She currently is active in Decorative baking, Culinary and art of Rangoli. She is also interested in Community work, Gardening, Dancing, Learning new skills and Teaching.

Both the trainers quit their jobs to chase their dreams and truly are an inspiration. Women entrepreneurs are said to encompass approximately 1/3 of all entrepreneurs worldwide. These self-businesses give one a flexible work schedule, helps control one’s career, take their personal vision and turns it into a lucrative business.

Ms Vijaya kicked off the workshop stating a few basic principles that apply to the preparations of nearly every cake. All the cakes, muffins, brownies that they demonstrated were made with whole wheat flour and were eggless. The reason being whole wheat has more nutritional benefits than the white flour. Eating whole grains lower the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and high blood pressure. As it’s rich in fibre, whole wheat supports healthy digestion and secondly people who are vegetarians or have allergic reactions to eggs or older people who are advised to eat less cholesterol diets eat eggless food products.

A step-by-step guide to the demonstration was shown to the students by way of slides. They also shared insights on common baking-fails, and how they can be prevented. To get one started some of the most basic cake recipes was presented that were not only a cakewalk to prepare but were all-time favourites too. Watching them bake a cake from scratch seemed completely doable for the students.

Vanilla Sponge Cake, Muffins, Marble Cake, Oreo Brownie, Cupcakes were the items that were baked one after the other. After the basic demonstration, the students helped in sifting flour, mixing dry ingredients and wet mixture, creamed butter and learnt the technique of cut and fold, pouring the cake batter in the cake tin and placing it in the oven. In a matter of time voilà! A perfectly baked cake was ready. With delicious cake everywhere, temptation was hard to resist!

Next, Ms Roopa taught the students the method to make chocolate ganache. Ms Vijaya demonstrated decorating the cupcake with chocolate ganache, and showed different ways to decorate the cupcake.

The trainers had come prepared with over 180 ready cupcakes. Students were divided into groups, given the cupcakes and decorating supplies. Each one creatively decorated the cupcake and eventually ate it too. Ms Vijaya and Ms Roopa were impressed with the creative pieces of art on the cupcake and appreciated the students  

Prof Meera Krishnan proposed the vote of thanks. Dr Veena and Prof Nikitha thanked the trainers for their efforts and meticulous planning and presented a token of appreciation.

The girls had a great learning experience and enjoyed every minute of baking.
