Baking Basics Cupcake Wars

A one-day cake making workshop was conducted for girls on 1st Feb’19 on the IV Floor B Block from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The trainers were Ms Vijaya Vinod, a successful entrepreneur assisting a catering service, Kitchen Genie and Ms Roopa Manivannan who is currently active in decorative baking and culinary. The trainers kicked off the workshop stating a few basic principles that apply to the preparations of nearly every cake. A step-by-step guide to the demonstration was shown to the students by way of slides. The trainer’s immense insights of the various aspects such as usage of raw materials, mixing methods, setting up the right oven temperature helped students acquire a lovely and varied cake repertoire. They also shared insights on common baking-fails, and how they can be prevented. At the end of the session, they shared all the recipes with the students.

Baking isn’t just about throwing something in the oven. It’s a great way to bond with someone, a handy skill to pick up and is ever therapeutic for some. The hands-on baking cake workshop taught the students how to bake a cake that had the right balance of flavour, moisture, and texture. The students learnt to decorate the cakes as well. While the students practised the art of decorating the cupcakes, the motivation by the trainers helped build the confidence in students in their passion for baking.

The girls were ready for cupcake decoration war on 4 Feb’19 to show their newly acquired baking skills. They came with ready cupcakes and creatively used quick, easy-to-decorate cupcake toppers like sprinklers, chocolate shavings, chocolate chips, ball sprinklers, edible confetti, cherries, edible glitter, multicoloured sugar balls, sugar paste flowers and so on. and they had super fun! The student’s imagination ran riot and creative energy simply flowed while they were on the job of decorating the cupcakes. Very soon the simple looking cupcakes transformed into stunning cupcakes which looked so elegant and sophisticated besides tasted divine. The other purpose of the competition was to foster the spirit of unity/togetherness and the competition was a testament to that spirit of creativity and camaraderie.

Dr Veena-Dean, DSBA; Prof Nikitha Sreekantha-HOD and faculty were amazed to see the girls turning basic cupcakes into a treat, worthy of a celebration and adjudged all amateur bakers as winners.
