Dance with Me Dance Workshop for Girls

Dancing …...is like dreaming with your feet

An exclusive dance workshop was conducted over a period of three days i.e. 28th Jan’19 to 30th Jan’19 for girls @ DSBA. The girls were grouped into two batches for better learning. The timings of the first batch was 10 am to 12 pm and the second batch was from 1:30 pm to 12:30 pm. The workshop was conducted at G-05.

The introductory dance session took place on 28th Jan’19. Ms Meghana [I Year BBA] introduced Ms Swathi Ramesh to the first-year students and Ms Chaithra, her peer, welcomed her with a bouquet.

Ms Swathi Ramesh and Ms Chaithra Mendan, both final year BBA students took the initiative to train the girls of DSBA to dance. Regardless of the types of students present at the workshop -many were non-dancers -with their great, positive force, they ensured that each one was given an opportunity to learn dance, express themselves creatively and eventually shed their inhibitions.

Ms Swathi has been conducting these dance workshops ever since she joined DSBA.She is a professional dancer and has versatility in various dance forms and has choreographed for various school and college events. She even participates and choreographs fashion events like Deccan Herald Fashion Show. She had organized a corporate event for Gulf Oil and won numerous accolades. She won the National level Hip-hop Dance Championship in 2015.

Ms Chaithra, a professional dancer too, assisted Ms Swathi on all the three days and taught Zumba to the girls.

The advantages of dancing are innumerable -keeps both the body and the brain active, is vital for people of every age, improves strength and flexibility, improves posture and balance, reduces stress levels, increases self-esteem and confidence, offers a creative outlet and fun way to open up new possibilities, keep healthy and enjoy oneself.

Warm up is essential for all dancers on all dance occasions (rehearsal, class, practice, and performance) to prepare for dance, both mentally and physically, and to prevent injury. This applies to all styles of dance. With the right warm up and cooling down, there is less potential for injury when people dance. Hence on all the three days, the instructors had warm up sessions for ½ an hour. A warm up included exercises for ankles, knees, hips, spine, shoulders, elbows and wrists with 6-8 repetitions of each exercise. By the end of the warm up the girls felt warm, relaxed and were ready to put on their dancing shoes.

Ms Swathi’s forte lies in Hip-hop amongst others and so she taught Hip-hop to the students. Hip-hop is a very popular dance style, which is said to have it roots in street dancing. Hip hop dance came to prominence with Hip hop music. As beginners, students were taught the basic Hip hop moves on the first day. Isolation plays a very crucial role in Hip-hop. Hence, they were taught isolation for head, chest, hips and the jumps. The key to Hip -hop dancing lies in grooving with attitude. Over the period of two days, the students were taught some shuffle and some freestyle moves!

Later, they were taught to groove on two songs -Lamberghini [Punjabi Song] and Scooby-Doo Pa Pa [English].

Ms Chaithra taught Zumba which is being considered as one of the most popular fitness and cardio exercise. Being one the dance drive workout, Zumba dance work out has its own benefits, which includes its potential to burn calories, work out the whole body, enhance the metabolism, increase endurance, raise mood, aid coordination, and enhance confidence.

Both Ms Swathi and Ms Chaithra’s genuine enthusiasm and patience helped the students overcome their inhibitions and put them at ease. So, the students looked forward to dancing on all the three days.

With a little more practise, under the tutelage of Ms Swathi and Ms Chaithra, DSBA girls will shortly form a dance troupe and participate in the forthcoming Inter-Class and Inter-College Dance Competitions.
