Illustration Workshop

The School of Architecture-SOA DSATM teamed up with DSBA to conduct a Five-Day Skill Development & Value-Added Short-Term Certificate Course for the students of second and final year BBA, BCom & BCA students. The five-day extensive hands on workshop was conducted from 15th July 2019 to 19th July 2019 in which 200 students approximately participated with great interest. The venue was SOA-DSATM, M Block.

It is important for the undergraduate students to keep abreast of the different approaches that add value to education. The aim of the workshop was to bring an awareness to the students about the meaningful connections that exist among the disciplines, sharpen students’ understanding, thus enabling them to become well-supported creative and better learners. 

Day -1 [15 July 2019]

Inauguration & Talk on Creativity by Prof. Gaddam Durga Ramesh, Director, SOA DSATM & Artist Mr. Paramesh Jolad

It took place at 10 am at the IV floor DSATM hall. The second and third year UG students from DSBA attended the program. Prof Nikitha Sreekantha -HOD, DSBA coordinated the event with Prof Ditimoni Baruah & Prof Mamata G, SOA Faculty Coordinators.

Prof Ramesh is the Director & Prof at SOA DSATM and his educational qualifications include MCP-IIT Kharagpur, B Arch. His area of interests are Architectural Design, Building Construction and services.

Prof Ramesh began the orientation by saying that art is an inherent trait which is present in all individuals right from one’s young age. But what is lacking is the ability of identifying and exploring the trait. Hence, in the next four days students will be taught how to channelize one’s ability and turn it into productivity! He further spoke about the art of sketching. It helps reading a person’s mind, the mystery that exists in there, and the ability it has in creating an impression.  In the training, the students will also understand relevance of sketching; He said drawing tools, communicating ideas through drawings and models indeed grabs attention of people. Concepts like design, material, colour, basics of architecture were explained and many architectural wonders of the world were shown to the students.

Mr. Paramesh Jolad is an Artist. His educational qualifications are M.Phil., M. FA, B.FA.

Mr Paramesh spoke extensively about his art passion and showed pictures, paintings, illustrations of his artwork. Real size, functional furniture made out of corrugated cardboard sheets by Architecture students as part of their assignments was also shown during the orientation.

Students were briefed about the four-day workshop and told what they can expect from it. They were instructed to bring some stationery materials for the workshop. 

Day-2 [16 July 2019]

Pattern Making using pencils & cut- outs by Ar. Rhythema Rawat & Artist Mr. Paramesh Jolad

Ar. Rhythema Rawat is an Asst Prof [Tenure Basis] at SOA-DSATM. Her educational qualifications include M. Arch, B. Arch. She has an experience of eight years and her area of interests are in Architecture Design, Urban Design, Sustainable Urban Development and Urban Photography.

On Day-2, the students assembled at Architecture ‘M’ Block at 10 am where they were introduced to the SOA-DSATM faculty who were to guide the students for the remaining four days.

The workshop began with the warm up exercise in which the much-needed activity for the fingers and hands was conducted. The students were told to make four different patterns of their choice on A4 sheet.

In the next session, the students were instructed to make non-monotonous pattern on 15’’ x 15’’ ivory sheet and carve it. This activity helped in showcasing one’s drawing skills. The meaningful art work made was beautiful, either abstract, floral or geometric. Students thoroughly enjoyed this activity!

Day-3 [17 July 2019]

Paper craft by Internationally recognized Paper Engineer Mr. Arun Desai, Studio Chitte

The day began on an exciting note. Mr Arun Desai has an MSc degree and he is a Paper Engineer who constantly pushes himself to explore and reinvent the art form of paper cutting. He combines his knowledge of Math and paper crafts to teach Geometry and Science. His work ‘the Rooster ‘got him an international recognition; it is on a permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.

Mr Desai showed students pictures of his art work, models, paper structures and explained each one of them. Students realised that paper can be used in a diverse way and is indeed versatile. Students were fascinated with his models. Some were collapsible and looked as though they were made with folded papers, some models like butterflies, flag pole even moved when the hand pedals were rotated. Most of his models were made only with paper and adhesive and the technique used by him was cut and fold method.

In the morning session, Mr Arun taught the students to make cube model using two square papers. Most of the models made by the students turned out well.

In the noon session, Mr Desai taught students to make objects using basic folds out of A4 size sheets with the help of scissors. Students were advised to be cautious with the thin papers and scissors as the mistakes made could be irreversible. This activity reminisced in the students the art and craft classes during their school days. Students were baffled at their own handiwork as the day went by. It was a fun day with a lot of learning!

Day -4 [18 July 2019]

2D & 3D Paper Composition by Ar. Rhythema Rawat & Artist Mr. Paramesh Jolad

In the morning session, the students were taught to create an 2D illusion using light, medium and dark shade. Later, they were taught to convert a 2D drawing into a 3D image. Many examples were shown to help students understand, get an idea and inspire in students to be as creative as they could get.

In the noon session, the students were divided into groups of four members. Coloured chart paper and other required materials were provided. The teachers were extremely helpful and guided them at every stage of planning and execution. The students worked hard for about two hours, came up with their own brilliant ideas and the resultant art work at the end of the day was truly mesmerising. Some groups made trees, scenery, Lord Shiva, Red Indian, girl, flower vase, some really simple looking stuff to name a few. The latent talent in students came to the forefront on that wonderful day!

Day-5 [19 July 2019]

The final day of the workshop.

Mr Parmesh, the trainer explained in detail what is art and its importance with some projected images. Students were taught to make a 3D model and enlightened about how the structures stand without support and also how the inner part of the structure should be designed so as to give strength to the model. Numerous examples were shown to the students to help clarify the concept. The task given to the students was to create an object, space, shelter using binding wires and synthetic wool. They were advised to keep their idea simple as the time available was too little. Time was allotted for conception of idea and its execution. Students worked in groups of four and completed the task. At the end, some of the artwork created were trees, wall hanging, cup & saucer, dolls, toys etc.

The art work done by the students during the four days of the workshop was displayed on the ground floor exhibition hall of the Architecture M Block. Dr [Brig] Sandes, Principal; Prof Nikitha Sreekantha, HOD, Prof Gaddam Durga Ramesh, Director-SOA, DSATM; Faculty from both the institutions were invited to the exhibition. A slide show of photographs was also shown. Ar Rhythema Rawat gave details of the four- day workshop and shared her views.

Certificate of participation/ appreciation was handed over to second and third year DSBA students and DSBA faculty who coordinated the event.

The interdisciplinary approach created a powerful learning experience and emphasized integrative learning, critical thinking, and creative problem solving. The unique hands-on activities and the multidisciplinary approach used in the workshop enriched students’ perception and experience and made the learning process more productive and enjoyable and can now, engender in students the capacity to analyse information and apply it to real life cases.
