Yoga Programme conducted at DSBA

Each college semester requires a high level of concentration besides, the anxiety levels rise in the students when they try to meet the expectations of deadlines and good grades. Practicing regular yoga reduces stress and promotes relaxation. Yoga encourages a positive mental attitude and helps in stress management.

Yoga Programme was organised for the second semester BCom, BBA and BCA students in the beginning of the even semester between 4th and 8th Jan’16 in the college hours in the landing of the fourth floor of the Management Block.

Ms Upasana from the Art of Living Ashram was the trainer for the sessions. To begin, she informed the students on the benefits of yoga .For the duration of the programme, she advised the students to wear comfortable clothes, bring yoga mats, avoid meat consumption and to drink lots of water.

The session began with simple breathing exercises. Breathing increases immunity, relaxes and calms the mind. Pranayama [Breathing exercises] can bring the mind to a pleasant state by enhancing and regulating the life force in the system.

Next, the students were taught the Surya namaskar which gives a profound stretch to the whole body. Synchronizing the breath with the movements of the body is very important. Incorporating the Surya Namaskar into daily routine can make a positive difference to life.

After that, the students did meditation. Meditation improves concentration, reduces blood pressure, decreases absenteeism & tardiness, betters grades and sleep, improves interpersonal relationships, helps develop confidence, relieves headache and makes one calm. 

In the subsequent days, students did Sudarshan kriya-a simple rhythmic breathing technique that incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath, harmonizes the body mind and emotions and Bhastrika Pranayama-an important breath exercise in yoga and pranayama.

The students were also taught Yoga Asanas. Yoga poses increase flexibility, stamina and endurance of body parts. It also makes the body healthy and strong and the mind peaceful and focused.

Students also had fun during the session when they were divided into groups .Each group consisted of both boys and girls. They were told about yoga dance and the students were instructed to perform that on the final day-the 8th of Jan.

At the end of the session, the students realised that by practicing yoga regularly, they can improve their mood, strengthen their body, relieve stress, and concentrate better.

This will certainly help them go a long way in making the most of their college experience!
