National Service Scheme Special Camp

DSBA students enrolled for NSS went for a special camp to Jnana Bharathi University, NSS Bhavan. The camp was from 28th Jan’16 to 2nd Feb’16. The students started from college on 28th Jan at 10:30 am & were at their destination at 11:30 am. They attended the valedictory function of the previous batch and at 5 pm NSS Camp was officially inaugurated.Dr Veena K N –Dean DSBA was also part of the function. She addressed the enthusiastic students who were inspired and motivated by her words. 5 groups were made and they were named as: Swami Vivekananda, Kempe Gowda, Kittu Rani Channama, Onake Obavva and Alluri Sita Ramaraju. Each group was assigned duties. Cultural evening was organised at the end of the day. Prof Kasthuri Gopal, coordinator NSS [DSBA] coordinated the events on all the days.

On 29th Jan’16 after morning exercises, the groups dispersed for shramadhan at 'Manasa Bhavan' [Department of Economics]. They cleaned the inner premises & were appreciated by the faculties of the department. Between 4 pm and 5:30 pm in the evening, a guest lecture was arranged. Dr. Shashidhar Chanappa spoke on the topic ‘HIV & AIDS’. Team ‘Vivekananda Swami’ put up a cultural show from 6pm to 8 pm.

As it was the occasion of the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhiji, at 9:30 am on 30th Jan’16, after the exercises in the morning, ten students along with Prof. Kasthuri left for a seminar at 'Gandhi Bhavan' near Anand Rao Circle .The remaining students went for shramadhan and cleaned the main road of the university by picking up the papers and plastic. At 3:30 pm a seminar was conducted by Ms. Ranjitha on ‘Gender discrimination’. Team 'Bhagath Singh' were responsible for the evening’s cultural event which began at 6 pm and ended at 8 pm.

On the fourth day of the camp, after the flag hoisting and exercise the students were divided into two groups –one went to ‘Bio Park’ and the other went to ‘Manasa Bhavan’ for shramadhan. Students realised that irrespective of clearing up the premises for the past two days, the garbage level didn’t seem to lessen. A seminar was conducted on 'Swachch Bharath' by Mr Ananda between 3:30 and 5 pm.After the cultural events at 7:30 pm Prof.Srinivas, the NSS Coordinator of Bangalore University addressed the students about the beginnings of NSS, importance & benefits of being a NSS volunteer.

On 1st Feb’16, the fifth day of the camp, the workout session commenced once the flag was hoisted, which was followed by Yoga session and then body exercises, Yoga was conducted by Prof Kasthuri. The students felt relaxed and peaceful and it was a great start to the day. Students did shramadhan at Bio Park, cleaned up the area and then went to Charka Vanna- it is a biological reserve in the Bangalore University which is of about 18 acres and includes all the herbal plants and trees .It was discovered by Charka who was one of the inventors of Ayurveda, the Indian medicine. The evening ended with cultural events again.

On 2nd Feb’16, aerobics was conducted by NSS volunteer instead of the regular exercises .This was followed by a Guest Lecture by Dr. C.R.Satya (friend of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam) He shared his knowledge about “Youth for Science and Scientific Attitude”. In the evening session after the Cultural Activity NSS Coordinator Prof Srinivas delivered a speech.

On 3rd Feb’16 –the last day of the camp the valedictory function was held. The Chief Guest was Dr. Aarathi.V.B-a Sanskrit Scholar. The Principal-Dr. (Brig) Sandes, Dean-Dr. Veena.K.N, HOD-Prof. Nikitha Sreekantha, NSS Co-ordinator-Prof Kasthuri Gopal attended the function with all the NSS volunteers. The valedictory event started off with a melodious devotional song by the volunteers, which was followed by lighting up of the holy lamp. Dr. Aarathi.V.B gave a speech about how important it is to love one’s motherland and follow the unique culture the country has. She made everyone understand the true essence of patriotism and each one felt proud to be an Indian. She concluded her speech by motivating people to serve the nation. After the speech, one volunteer from each of the six groups shared their experiences at the NSS camp in the presence of the guests. Around 12:30pm the vote of thanks was proposed and that brought an end to the memorable and pleasant experience .NSS volunteers look forward to such camps in the future too.
