Dance with Me A Workshop for Girls

Dance to Express not to Impress

A dance workshop ‘Best Foot Forward’ was conducted for DSBA girls from 2nd to 4th April 2018 during the college hours. Two batches were formed -one batch of girls attended the morning session and the other batch at noon. The dance sessions happened in G-05.

The dance instructors were Ms Swathi Ramesh and Ms Chaithra Mendan. Both are pursuing 4th semester BBA.

Ms Swathi is a professional dancer and is versatile in various dance forms. She choreographs for various school and college events. She won the National level Hip-hop Dance Championship in 2015. She had conducted a similar dance workshop for DSBA girls last year.

Ms Chaithra is also a professional dancer and she taught Zumba to the girls.

Dance training itself provides many benefits—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Students often find that their dance training has assisted them in developing many life skills, and in developing a confidence in confronting challenges in other areas of their lives. Dance training requires the student to “multi-task” by using visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic skills to produce movement in a specific way. Dance develops skills of concentration, memorization, and focus—all of which carry over into successful academic achievement. Dance embraces multiple genres, styles and traditions and is constantly evolving.

Both Ms Swathi and Ms Chaithra taught the girls some warm up exercises. It is important for dancers to warm up before any dance activity in order to prepare the body. It helps to decrease tension in the muscles and joints. One can then ensure that one can move without stress and strain during activity. A safe warm up gradually increases the body temperature to an optimal working level and helps avoid injuries. The cool down is just as important after dancing as this can help to reduce muscle soreness and speed up the recovery process after the activity.

At the behest of the students, Ms Swathi taught them contemporary dance styles. Contemporary dance has no boundaries, stresses unpredictability, expression, and freedom, while simultaneously maintaining a strong focus on technique. It focuses on movement of the torso, which enables much more fluid, languid movement, rather than sharp and pointed movements. Ms Swathi choreographed the dances to the student’s favourite music. She taught the basics of the style, as well as the proper technique and ensured that all the girls executed dance moves correctly. Contemporary dance is not only an excellent way to express oneself artistically but also a great way to get exercise and have fun!

Ms Chaithra taught the girls Zumba. The best part of Zumba is that one doesn’t even feel like one is exercising, as it is so fast paced and so much fun that students felt like they were just dancing around with friends. It is a great cardio workout; it also helps to tone all the muscles in the body. It is therapeutic as Zumba is a great way to relieve stress while having fun and getting in a great work out.

The girls enjoyed the three-day dance workshop. Both Ms Swathi and Ms Chaithra’s vibrant personality engaged and motivated the girls to develop their own creativity through dance. The girls were inspired by their trainers and enjoyed themselves to such an extent that they are looking forward to more of such dance workshops.
