The session began with “WIIFM”-What’s in it for me? The trainer briefed us about what we’ll take home from this training! It was followed by an ice-breaker game- ‘Buddy Twist’. For this game the class was divided into six groups. Each group had 12 students each. Now, we had to pair ourselves, get to know about our partner’s ambitions/goals and narrate it to the entire class. After the activity, a discussion took place about the various aspects of communication observed by us of our peers -qualities a good sender/receiver possesses, differences and meanings of words, summarizing, probing, paraphrasing etc.

Next activity was called ‘Traffic Lights’; wherein, we had to list our weaknesses, areas we are relatively good at, as well as strengths under the three different columns -Red, Yellow and Green respectively. This activity is similar to SWOT Analysis. This was followed by another group activity called “Human Machines”. Each group chose a machine and enacted the way the machine worked to the other groups. [The machines chosen were car, charger, TV, watch, bike and fan]. The group to whom the enactment was done had to guess what the machine was. The group members explained the role of the component. At the end of the activity, we were expected to give one tip each for effective communication.

Next, each team was given a puzzle. The hidden words related to communication was to be found by the team. With the help of images, the trainer explained about perception. This was followed by yet another fun filled activity- “I…Me…Myself”’-In this activity we had to choose a brand and associate ourselves with the tagline or the brand itself. Subsequently, the trainer taught the styles of communication-passive, aggressive and assertive styles of communication. We were also given ideas to create a win-win situation using assertive style of communication. A brief discussion on ‘Hearing and Listening’ followed.

Before the conclusion, the trainer discussed about the proceedings of the day and review of learning. We all enjoyed the activity- based learning training session as we were exposed to something more than classroom learning and that could not only make understanding concepts easier but fun, too. The activities designed helped us overcome inhibitions, developed our interpersonal skills and facilitated in building rapport with our teammates.
