In the forenoon, Mr Vivek took over the session. He asked the students to introduce themselves by stating their names and their native place. In addition, state one unique quality of theirs which will help him to remember their names easily. Then he asked the students to tell him the language they find it easier to converse in. It wasn’t a surprise that the students stated that they were most comfortable speaking in their mother tongue. To test the students, he asked them to expand the abbreviation ISRO in both English as well as their mother tongue. Students immediately expanded it in English but were unable to do so in their mother tongue, proving that comfort lies in speaking in English. Next, he taught them the meaning of slang term which is short! Actually, students misconstrue it very often. He advised the students to read the editorial in ‘The Hindu’; wherein, one can find a number of new words and their meanings. He continued by saying that, in case one doesn’t know the meaning of a word one must immediately google it and learn. Thereby, one can understand that a word may have several meanings. The dictionary adds new words every year. An activity was conducted in which students had to spell words correctly. He advised students to avoid short forms while texting and avoid typing Kannada words in English so as not to turn it into a habit.

That was followed by a Grammar session. Grammar instruction included Parts of Speech and types of nouns. Mr Vivek told students to write a paragraph using all types of nouns. He instructed the students to come forward to read their paragraphs, and warned the others not to giggle at the ones who were reading, as that lowers the self-confidence in the individual. Lots of grammar was taught during that session.

The morning session of the next day was taken by Mr Vivek. He began the session by asking students to speak about their goals. He elaborated on goal setting and offered suggestions. He then taught grammar-the topic being tenses. Though there were no activities conducted in the session, the students liked the way he conveyed and effectively presented the message.

The noon session was about grooming for both boys and girls. This session was taken by Mr Mohsin. He showed a number of images. Though the time just seemed to zip by, he managed to give examples, narrated situations to explain the topic and ensured the class session was enjoyable.

The latter part of the class was based on vocabulary. The class was divided into six groups. Each group had to choose a movie and change the climax. Each group and each one in the group got a chance to narrate the changed climax by coming forward to the dais. This activity was extremely interesting. Eventually, the day turned out well -with activities and grammar!

Mr Vivek spent the next day morning teaching students’ tenses. He explained the grammar topic very well and made the grammar session very fascinating. Mr Mohsin was the instructor during the noon session. He first taught the format of a formal letter and the way one sends an email and then made students write a formal letter. He corrected the errors. He continued by teaching students paragraph writing. Students followed the instructions given and wrote a paragraph on unemployment.

The noon class was taken by Mr Abishith. He told the students to first write some words in a book. Then make a story by using all those words. Next, the students had to come to the dais and read their story. The words used in many stories absolutely had no meaning. The idea behind the session was to improve communicative skills and vocabulary.

Mr Vivek was back the next day morning and he taught types of verbs. Students had to make sentences using types of verbs and later write a passage. In the forenoon, the topic discussed was ‘Time Management’. He spoke about the importance of being punctual and related it with his life. This was followed by a game; wherein, the students understood about time management, how to deal with stress and pressure. Yet, another game was played with bottles and once again the students understood the significance of time.

The noon class began with students writing a poem on their partners. This paved way for a session on adjectives. They were taught types of adjectives. The class ended with plenty of activities and illustrations.

The next day Mr Vivek discussed the kinds of sentences-Declarative and Assertive. He gave five examples and students had to write ten more sentences. Then he explained the kinds of sentences. A discussion on ‘Valentine’s Day’ followed to aid communication. Students stated their opinion about it. After a lot of deliberations, a conclusion was drawn. Students could continue having their opinions /perceptions about the same. Mr Mohsin continued the session. He told the students to individually to come to the dais, make an eye contact and speak on any topic. He said that he would give a feedback at the end of the session so that the students can improve on their weaknesses. The noon class was taken by Mr Abhishith. One vocabulary related activity was such that the students had to write the names of countries, animals, cars, birds, cities etc.

On the following days , the students were taught the remaining parts of speech and analogy. All the topics were taught by way of games and activities which helped students understand the grammar lessons really well.

On the concluding day the students had to participate in team activities. In the first activity, Mr Abishith provided 12 toothpicks and glue and told the groups to make towers with them. The tallest tower did not reach the height of 53 cm in spite of students using all the materials that they could lay their hands on. Mr Abishith was quite disappointed with the team’s creativity. The other activity was an origami activity. Students were given three sheets of paper and they were supposed to make as many craft items as could with the papers.

The ten-day workshop helped all students understand the importance of personal development. All the tasks, games, talks and discussions planned for the sessions helped one involve in social interaction, identify one’s strengths and weaknesses, develop new skills. improve communication skills, boost in confidence, among other things!
