Alumni -Student Interaction Report

Things are always calm in the middle, it doesn’t have the excitement of the beginning nor does it have the nervousness and heavy heart syndrome of the end, such was our interaction on 13th Apr 2019 with the second year BBA and BCom students of our alma mater Dayananda Sagar Business Academy. The Alumni who interacted with the students were Ms. Lavanya Krishna (BBM,2016), Client Recruitment Specialist and yours truly, Mr. Aditya. R (B. Com, 2016), Operations Manager at Unlisted Kart.

There were about 50 odd eager students on one side and there were two on the other, it was a very interactive and informative session, wherein second year students were able to get an idea of the real world of which they had no clue about!  Students discussed their ideas and passions, what their dreams were, business ideas they wanted to pursue, their talents and passions, dance, ethical hacking, stock market, sales and so on, the list was endless. They were eager to know about the opportunities they had ahead, the path that they could choose in achieving that, the challenges they might face etc.

In the first part of the session, after the basic introduction of ourselves, we went around the room and asked students about their ideas; we found varied interests and passions among them- someone wanted to open their own catering business, some were interested to know about trading and stock market and how they worked; and the alumni were happy to help them with the desired information .

In the second half, we were open to the questions from the students. They wanted to know the recruitment process, what are the basic skills an HR looks for while hiring a candidate etc. Ms. Lavanya explained the process in brief-the vast pool of sources, recruiters use to select the desired candidates so that the students understand the existing requirements and demands.

We also spoke to the students about the importance of acquiring various certifications and skills which the institution is already providing them that will help them in future, but presently not taken seriously enough by them!

We also highlighted the importance of using social media for the right purpose, we touched upon the various sites and platforms which they might make use of for their internships, also how to create and update their LinkedIn profiles, which is a huge booster for one’s career. Students seemed very interested, especially at the way Ms. Lavanya used her own example with LinkedIn, and stated how it helped her in her own career. This fascinated them, so they listened carefully and were able to recognize the impact.

In the last part of the session, we spoke about networking and improving one’s corporate skills like e-mail writing, presentations and communication which is of utmost importance to all the management graduates.

Due to positive response, demand and interest, we agreed to take a separate session on a résumé preparation and assist in LinkedIn makeover, as that would be very useful to them in the coming years.

The session lasted for an hour and was a memorable one which involved learning and sharing; the two most important things in a student’s life. We thank the management and faculty for their time and support in making the session a great success.
