Financial Modelling Certification

Class: III Year BCom & BBA

Program Objective: To facilitate students in understanding how financial models are used to estimate the valuation of a business or to compare businesses to their peers in the industry.

Student Learning Outcome: At the end of the certification program, students were able to strategically plan and test various scenarios, calculate the cost of new projects, decide on budgets, and allocate corporate resources.

The resource person was Mr.Supreeth Garla. He is the Executive Director of NICT Computer Education Pvt Ltd. He is Google AdWords certified, is well versed with Social Media, Email and Digital Marketing, SEO, Website Design and a Business Consultant. 

In the fortnight, students learned the following:

Excel proficiency: Creating a Financial ModellingTemplate,Reverencing (using $),Goal Seek and Solver Functions, Data Table, Working on Dates, Data Sort and Filter, lookup and Hlookup,Pivot Tables,Excel Functions and Conditional Formatting

Introduction to Financial Modelling: What is Financial Modelling? Valuation/Business Plan/Project Evaluations, What is Financial Statement Analysis (FSA)? Overview of Financial Statements, Users of FSA and where to find the financial statements, Key Concepts: Time Value of Money, Double Entry Accounting, Accrual Accounting and Three Phases: 1. Populating Historical 2. Forecasting Financial Performance 3.

Financial Statement Analysis: Introduction to Financial Statement Analysis, Financial Reporting Mechanics, Understanding Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, Financial Analysis Techniques, Inventories, Long-Lived Assets, on-Current Liabilities and Financial Statement Application. Students worked on the BUS model. 

Corporate Finance: Time value of money, NPV & IRR, FCFF & FCFE, Long term financing, Cost of capital and Measure of Leverage

Franchise Development Model (Automobile Sector)- Data Capture Theory, Revenue Drivers, Cost Metrics, Income statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flows, Debt Schedule,NPV & IRR.and Sentiment Analysis. Students worked on Toyota Showroom

Project Finance (Manufacturing Sector)- Understanding the Project Finance Model, Characteristics of Project Finance, Risk and contractual arrangement to Mitigate Risk, Implementing Interest During Construction and Breaking Circular Loops, Incorporating Delays in the Model, Why Project evaluations, Stage of project, Construction & development phase, Funding during investment phase, Costs during investment phase, Life of project; decision making and Cash flow waterfall & resolve circular reference problem in interest during construction. Students worked on Sugar Plant Factory.

Merger & Acquisition (IT Sector) - Meaning and categories of M&A, Merger motivations, Forms of payment in a Merger Deal, Hostile Vs Friendly offer, Evaluating a Merger Bid, Merger Analysis - Key Drivers and Inputs, Synergy and Accretion/Dilution Analysis, Merger Plan - Ownership Vs Deal Price, Modelling a financing plan, Performing sensitivity analysis on Acquirers EPS, Performing Contribution Analysis, Estimating value of a Merger Transaction,

Discounted  Cash flow  Analysis, Comparable Company Analysis, Comparable Transaction Analysis. Students will work on Microsoft & Linkedin Merger

Ratio Analysis-Liquidity Ratios, Leverage Ratios, Efficiency Ratios, Coverage Ratios, Profitability Ratios

Equity Research Modelling Data Collection and Data Structuring Modelling the Historical Statement, Business Drivers Identification and Modelling, Modelling Assumptions for Future Action, Modelling Cost Build-up - projecting the future cost, Modelling the Asset Schedule, Modelling the Depreciation Schedule - Working Capital & Term Loan Modelling - Debt Infusion, Modelling MAT and MAT credit, Modelling the projected P/L and BS, Modelling the projected Cash Flow Statement, Performing Ratio Analysis,WACC and Cost of Equity Analysis, Performing  valuation using DCF ,Performing sensitivity/scenario analysis. Students worked on Retail Sector.

Towards the end of the sessions, students had a much clearer understanding of finance concepts as well as an extended knowledge of the spreadsheet package.
