Dr. [Brig] Sandes, principal welcomed and thanked the speaker for accepting the invitation and conducting the session.

Dr. Manoj started the session by giving us the statistical data of various surveys conducted earlier, which says that 82% of the Indians cannot live without the internet. Then he compared Maslow’s theory of needs and the present generation’s technological needs, usage of various devices, internet, addictions etc. He then spoke about the signs of excessive/addictive use, gaming, and technology and also stated the reasons for why people use their phones.

Then he discussed the adverse use of the internet like the negative view of self, negative-self evaluation, low-self esteem, self-doubt and the thought process associated with it. He also spoke about the effects of excessive use of technology like Nomophobia, Phantom vibration syndrome, Zero inbox syndrome, Snap chat syndrome, Selfitis, Digital amnesia, Doom surfing, Digital Burnout, etc.

He then spoke about criminal activities, how minors are able to open social media accounts, accept friend requests from strangers, its implications like becoming vulnerable to online threats and hazards, how internet the helps criminals to easily investigate potential victims anonymously.

Then he guided us to get de-addicted from excessive use of devices through simple steps. The first step is identifying or assessing the kind of use and observing 5 Cs - Carving, Control, Coping, Compulsions, Consequences in oneself as 4 or more indicates problems. Then he suggested us to take frequent breaks after every 30 minutes of serene time and after 45 minutes of headphone use, 10 to 15 minutes break after every episode to avoid binge-watching. He recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day, maintaining self-hygiene, restricting using devices 30 to 45 minutes before sleeping, digital fasting, developing leisure activities, spending time with family etc. He also recommended breathing exercises, blinking eyes, bending the head forward and backward, wrist rotation during the frequent breaks while using devices.

He shared with us about the SHUT Clinic Digital Detox app for more assistance for oneself and also for others. He also informed when one should seek medical help, consult experts. At the end of the session, a brief summary was given after which a Q and A session started. Our principal question about the ideal duration for conducting online classes, our dean asked about the people with technology addiction and how they cope up with the help of an experts guide followed by a few other questions. We are thankful for NSS program Officer Prof. Rajani, Dr. [Brig] Sandes, principal, Dr. Veena K N, Dean, Dr. Nikitha Sreekantha, HOD, DSBA for organizing the session and providing us the digital Certificate of Participation.
