Coping With Learning Deficits During Pandemic

On 16th June 2021, Dayananda Sagar Business Academy had organized an interactive session on “How to cope with the learning deficits due to pandemic”. The session commenced at 8:30 A.M on Zoom platform. It began with a brief introduction on the resource person, Dr Pranesh B Aswath, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Ad Interim, by Dr Veena K N . He is currently The Chief Academic Officer at University of Texas at Arlington; pursued BE from IASE, Bangalore and PH.D and MS in Material Science.

The session started off with an introduction of his college where there are global enrolment of more than 60,000 students and is the 5th most diverse University in U.S; standing 4th in Nation for Global Impact Ranking (Times Higher Education, 2019). Additionally, he mentioned the UTA by numbers where 7000+ employees worked. 

He then portrayed the transition story of his college, where he briefly explained about the complications faced during online classes. He remarked that the attention span of students in online classes is only 8 - 10 minutes. Later, he touched upon the outcome of passive learning which involves only the professor speaking and active learning call for interactive sessions like Q and A, quiz and so on.

He then fascinatingly referred to what a student success is. Furthermore, he stated the sense of belonging, helping students strengthen academic skills and strategies, access to campus and academic resources and opportunities, connect students to faculty and peer educators, experiential learning to prepare for career goals. The classes must allegedly split up into smaller segments to make it more engrossing.

He then went on to say about the academic success centre which included supplemental instruction, tutoring, peer mentoring and peer led team learning. Then, covered upon the success series, academic success learning and student success advocates.

It was indeed a captivating  experience in knowing the best ways to cope up with learning deficits during the pandemic and was a beneficial session.

The meeting concluded at 9:30 A.M with Q&A where many faculties came up with some interesting questions and have knowledge of how to deal with practical subjects and being aware of the dropouts and recognizing the students success with passive learning.
